Summary

Chapter XIV, “We Hold Our Breath” is told by “ALL OF US” November - December 1944 (296). The chapter is broken into sections that start with roughly the same sentence about receiving the news about Twitchy. The chapter starts, “We hear the news, but we don't believe it at first” as they cannot believe Twitchy is dead (296). They get a telegram and “the news hits Minnow like a truck” (297). They share the news, as Stan punches his barrack wall and Tommy tries to sink into the earth. “We hear the news. We hold our breath” (298). Bette says he is in a better place now, and Yuki argues with her about where he is. Mrs. Hashimoto says she sees his ghost, and Keiko just imagines him near her grinning.
