Summary
Chapter IX is titled “Hunky-Dory Whatever” and told by Mary Katusmoto, age 16 in October, 1943 (173). Page 172 to the left of the opening chapter includes a black and white picture from the real Tule Lake Segregation Center in California. Chapter IX starts with Mary and her family on an army truck as they arrive in Tule Lake. They notice the much taller fences than Topaz - and tanks. The family unloads and Mary is sullen, refusing to help her family.
Later, in their assigned room, Mary reads while Stan makes a sarcastic comment about her not helping. Mary thinks it is Stan and her Dad’s fault they are there since she and her Mom wanted to be Yes-Yeses but they said No-No. Her dad tells her to get up, but she walks out instead.
