Summary
Chapter V is titled “Wild Boy” from Frankie’s perspective, age 19, from January - February 1943 (100). Frankie and Stan are hanging out when they see army jeeps enter the camp, and Frankie admits the sight “makes me wanna hit something” (100). Four white guys and a person of Japanese descent (Frankie calls them “nihonjin”) climb out (100).
Frankie thinks of his dad, who fought in World War I, his father’s love of horses, about watching a horse race with his dad that went wrong, and the horse had to be shot. One night Frankie and “the boys” are throwing rocks as Frankie thinks about running away. The camp is buzzing that day because everyone 17 and older has to fill out a questionnaire about loyalty.
