Summary
Between Chapters II and III are two pages of Minnow’s drawing of Tanforan detention center. The drawing is dark with stars in the sky, with Yum-Yum playing piano while her music plays over the barracks and guard towers. Chapter III is titled, “I Am Not Free” with “Yum-Yum, 16” and “May-June 1942” below. It starts Day 1 (bolded) and below Yum-Yum talks about arriving at the camp and the medical examination. They are without their father, as he was taken by the FBI to Missoula.
They have to line up in separate gendered lines, making Yum-Yum’s mother panic as Fred, Yum-Yum’s nine-year old brother, has to be separate. In the female-only examination room cubicles, Yum-Yum’s mother coughs. Yum-Yum sees Hiromi and her blond wig. Hiromi wears it to be rebellious, but has to remove it to be checked for lice...
