Summary

In Chapter 12, when Ash returns to Shapely at the end of the day, Edi is uncomfortable. They agree it is unfair that she is in pain and dying (88). Edi asks Ash what she thinks happens “after you die” (88). Ash struggles to respond. She wonders if Edi will “turn into a kind of free-floating consciousness” (89). She wishes she could keep Edi. Grief overwhelms them.

In Chapter 13, Ash’s gynecologist tells her she is not sick. Ash admits she has several sexual partners. Her doctor suggests she is struggling to grieve. “Back in the car,” Ash puts on a tape Edi made and starts to cry (92). She gets pulled over for speeding. Through tears, she tells the officer about Edi. He lets her go with a warning. Honey comes to pick up Ash, as she is too upset to drive.
