Summary
In Chapter 6, Ash and Edi pretend they are dead, a game they have “been playing . . . since [they] were little” (45). Edi asks Ash what she is writing. Ash is “making some notes” about Shapely (45). They agree “the narrative arc” of the place “is kind of predictable” (45).
Edi tells Ash she wants a slice of Sicilian lemon polenta pound cake. Edi had The Cake “in the mid-1990s,” but could never find it again afterwards (46). The friends are “compiling a little cookbook for Dash” (46). Edi wants The Cake included, although they have been unable to find the recipe.
When Ash discovers Belle has skipped school again, she remembers growing up with Edi in New York. The friends reminisce about some of their experiences.
In Chapter 7, Ash and Belle lie in Ash’s bed, where they spend their days when they are home together (53). Edi texts...
