Summary
In Part 5, Chapter 6, Sam attends—and speaks at—an organized protest against the police shooting. In Part 5, Chapter 7, Ally is in her house that night when she feels a blow to the back of her head. She passes out, then briefly regains consciousness. She calls 911 before passing out again. In Part 6, Chapter 1, the narrative shifts to Ally’s perspective. She attends the state fair with Joe, and when she sees her mother there, she kisses Joe in full view of Sam. Ally is then shocked to see Sam walk away instead of confronting her. In Part 6, Chapter 2, Ally visits Lily. Lily tells Ally about her (Lily’s) terminal cancer. After the visit, Ally contacts Joe to end their relationship. In Part 6, Chapter 3, Ally texts her mother, ending her period of non-communication with Sam. Ally is surprised when she receives no reply...
