Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is one of the most populous cities in Brazil. In the novel, Rio is the home of the Yagodas, and it is where Emma initially travels to after leaving Pittsburgh to look for Beatriz. Rio is where Emma first meets Raquel and Marcus, as well as the criminal, Flamenguinho. Emma has visited Rio before in order to confer with Beatriz on translations of her works into English. Rio is described as being a very crowded city with extremely high temperatures around noon each day.
