Point of View
The novel is written in first person from the perspective of Marc. He is a seventh grader looking forward to the summer break when a new boy joins his class. The novel seems to be completely honest with Marc holding nothing back. That makes him an honest narrator. From the beginning of the story, most readers will recognize Marc's lack of humility and will understand that his ego has gotten out of control. Marc does not recognize this, meaning he does not say it to the reader. While he is not being deceptive, his inability to honestly analyze himself at the beginning of the story affects his reliability. Young readers may not immediately recognize Marc's faults just as Marc does not, but some will know what lessons Jake is going to impart long before Marc reaches that point of understanding.
