Summary

Chapter 1 opens with Marc explaining that he has been following a lifestyle he calls the Warrior Kid Path for the past three years. His seventh-grade year has been good, mainly because of that. He has two close friends, Kenny Williamson “who used to be a bully” and Nathan James, a boy Marc used to consider annoying. All three train in jiu-jitsu together. Marc is the leader of their small group. With only three days of school left before the summer break, a new boy named Danny Rhinehart joins their class. Their teacher, Mr. Oglethorpe, asks Marc to show Danny around. Danny is able to answer every math question. Marc notes that Danny is friendly and nice, and Marc soon begins to find the smile “kind of annoying.” At recess, Danny, Nathan, and Kenny do pull-ups. Marc expects Danny to feel intimidated.
