Summary

In the prologue, on March 24, Detective Rose Pelham inspects the crime scene at the yellow Melville Heights house. She puts a red tassel into “an evidence bag” (3). She wonders if it could “be the answer” to the case (4).

In Chapter 1, in January, Joey Mullen visited her mother’s grave. She updated her on her life. She had recently met and married Alfie and moved in with her brother Jack and his wife Rebecca.

Joey returned to her house in Melville Heights. She had always liked the neighborhood and was shocked when Jack invited her to stay with him and Rebecca until she and Alfie got on their feet (9). After living and working at a hotel in Ibiza for some time, Joey had “moved back to Bristol three months ago” (9).
