Part 1: Chapter 4 Summary
Nora goes for a long walk the next day, refusing to allow her fear of Streck to stop her determination to move out of the isolation her aunt imposed on her. Nora goes to the courthouse and Santa Barbara Mission, both places she lived close to but had never seen. At lunch, Nora stops in a park to eat a lunch she packed for herself. As Nora is sitting on a bench enjoying her food, Streck appears. Streck has been following her and now he sits close to her, leaving no doubt in her mind what he wants from her. Nora is horrified, but somehow finds the strength to spit a mouthful of cookie in Streck's face, hoping it will make him leave. However, this does not frighten Streck off, but appears to make him more determined to dominate her. Then...
