Summary

Titch and Wash decide to remain with James and his expedition for the time being. Wash practices drawing. Wash notices Titch become increasingly withdrawn and sad, and Wash believes that it is because of dysfunction between himself and his father. When Titch tells James of the situation involving Erasmus and Philip, James refuses to help Titch and Wash in any way, as James seems to believe that if people believe that he is dead, he can go on with his work without interruptions. Titch is furious at his father. Titch tells Wash that he must travel to somewhere safe without him. Then, to Wash’s shock, Titch walks away into a snowstorm, and Wash cannot follow. In Part 3, Chapter 1, after Titch’s departure, no one in the expedition is able to find him. James then quickly falls ill and dies. Wash...
