Summary
Nathaniel soon realized that a man present at Rose’s funeral had been the person who, years ago, had fallen from Rose’s roof. The man’s name was Marsh Felon, and Rose’ files revealed to Nathaniel that Marsh had been a British spy who worked alongside Rose. The narrative then switches to an account of Marsh’s story as pieced together by Nathaniel using both facts and speculation. As a boy, he had fallen from a roof while doing repair work on it for a job. He broke his hip and had to be stay inside the house during his recovery. He befriended Rose, who gave him books to read. Marsh was talented at sketching pictures. He eventually attended college, unlike much of his family.
