Summary
One day, Nathaniel witnessed Rachel have some type of seizure. This event was unprecedented in their lives. Fortunately, The Darter was present. He put a book in Rachel’s mouth so that she would not choke on her tongue, and the seizure soon passed. The Darter explained that he used to have a dog that was epileptic. The Darter was dating a woman named Olive Lawrence, a highly accomplished and independent woman who was an expert in ecology and ethnography. She often traveled for work, and she often spoke of her distant travels with a surprising air of ease and casualness. Nathaniel liked her for her beauty, poise, and intelligence. Eventually, Olive Lawrence returned to her work and her travels, effectively ending her relationship with The Darter. However, she occasionally sent letters to Nathaniel and Rachel about her travels.
