Summary
Set in Manhattan and Tokyo, the novel Warcross is narrated by protagonist Emika Chen in the first person. In Chapter 1, 18-year-old Emika races through the city on her electric skateboard after receiving an eviction notice from her landlord demanding that she pay the three months of rent she owes or face eviction in three days. To get the money, Emika, a bounty hunter, decides to hunt Martin Hamer, a petty criminal who gambles on the video game Warcross; his arrest is worth $5,000 to the police and due to a rising crime rate, they do not have the capacity to catch him themselves. Emika has 13 dollars in her bank account. By hacking into the game Warcross, she tracks Martin's location as the annual Warcross Championships are about to start in Tokyo.
