Summary
Maven is furious that Iris’ mother failed to send the full fleet to protect Harbor Bay even though Iris was in danger. He hears his mother’s voice which he pretends ins a comfort, but knows it is a curse. She tells him that the throne is all that matters, and Maven wishes that the voice was not so loud and painful. He thinks of how much he hates the Lakeland’s greed. However, he knows that the century long war between them and Norta was used to keep the Red population in check so they would not attempt to overthrow the Silvers. Manipulation always worked in the SIlver's favor. However, Maven misses his mother and Cal, believing that Mare is responsible for separating him from his family.
