Summary

Mare and her family follow the Montfort escort to Davidson's house overlooking Ascendant. They are in awe of the city, but Mare is uneasy as the house reminds her of a palace. However, both she and Farley realize that Montfort has no walls or gates and is relying on its place in the mountain to protect itself. Davidson gives Mare's family a large set of apartments and Mare feels that they are in safe hands. Her brother comes out to talk about the elephant flowers as they both wonder what elephants are. Mare tells him to go speak with Julian at dinner, but he refuses and says that her family and Kilorn will not be joining her for anything related to the war. Mare knows she has to become her own person as Gisa helps her get dressed for dinner...
