Summary

Outside of the council, Mare laughs uncontrollably at the idea of going to Montfort with the Silvers. She has already sent a message about it to her friend Kilorn in Piedmont. She remembers a prophetizer named Jon who is missing and knows this is the future he saw. She hesitates to return to the barracks as she believes Julian will agree with Cal's decision. She wonders if Cal plans to rebuild Norta back to the same prejudiced nation it was and knows she will not let that happen. Maven, who they overthrew for Cal, was so transfixed on Cal's father that he did not expect other kings to fight back. She wonders if Maven's obsession with her will convince him to kill Cal, or if Maven will wipe out all the other kings before they are ready.
