Summary
When Elizabeth and Sasha were in college in Boston, Sasha shaved Elizabeth's head. Though the style looked bad, Elizabeth felt comforted that Sasha still loved her. Meanwhile, men gave Sasha constant attention. Though Elizabeth felt they were the same person when they spent time together in private, whenever they went out together she realized they "were such completely separate things" (54). When Sasha started dating a busboy she met at a bar, her attention became divided. Then he suddenly stopped talking to her. Sasha told him she was pregnant, calling him incessantly. Elizabeth discovered Sasha was lying about the pregnancy.
Elizabeth skips work and has breakfast with the Chilean writer. She talks endlessly about Sasha, explaining that when she was with her she "wasn't in the world...detached from almost everyone" (58). Walking home, she texts Sasha congratulations on her pregnancy.
Elizabeth keeps waking up...
