Jude Star
Jude Star is one of the main characters of the novel. Segments of his storyline appear across Part One’s opening four chapters. When Jude is still a young boy, his name is Bird. He grows up in his tribe’s camp with his parents and grandmother, Spotted Hawk. Then one day in 1864, a band of American soldiers storms the Sand Creek camp and massacres hundreds of Cheyenne and Arapaho people, including Jude’s family. Jude flees and eventually is taken in by another Native man named Bear Shield. Here, he takes the name Star. For a time, Jude feels reconnected to his Native people and traditions. However, not long later, Jude is rounded up by a jailer named Richard Henry Pratt and relocated to Florida where he is institutionalized at a boarding school.
