Summary
In Chapter 17, “Superblood,” Lony sat by the rosebushes and tried to understand the weight his family carried (176). He took a thorn and dug it into his arm. His blood reminded him of Orvil’s blood after the shooting. He took out his pocketknife and dug a hole in the dirt. He cut himself and put the blood in the hole. He remembered “the Cheyenne name meant the cut people” and thought about Native and European beliefs (178). Sometimes Lony liked to think about his superpower. He guessed that Orvil’s superpower was “being bulletproof” (181). He wished he did not feel so sad. Then he saw Orvil on the roof holding scissors and his cut ponytail. They argued about the meaning of hair.
