Anh

Anh is one of the main characters of the novel. The majority of the chapters written from the third person point of view trace Anh’s story.

At the start of Wandering Souls, Anh is 16 years old. Although her parents are convinced that fleeing Vietnam for Hong Kong, and finally to America, will grant them freedom and a new life, Anh is wary of this move. In spite of her fears, she assures her younger siblings that “Everything will be alright,” and that their parents’ and uncle’s plan will go smoothly (12). Over the years following the family’s last night in Vietnam together, however, Anh will come to “regret that her last utterance to her family [was] a lie” (12). Indeed, some weeks after Anh and her brothers Minh and Thanh travel to Hong Kong, they discover that their parents and younger siblings have all died en route...
