Summary

In Chapter 24, “October 1984—London,” Minh struggled to find work. He was frequently discriminated against because he was Vietnamese. Eventually he found “a job at a nail salon” (135). However, he “was let go” after failing to master the necessary skills (136).

Discouraged, Minh thought life “would have been different in America” (136). He resented his father and uncle for their failed plan. He wanted to discuss the matter with Anh, but knew “she didn’t wish to explain” (136). Sometimes he wished they had never left Vietnam. Then one day, one of the Vietnamese men “from the council estate” offered him a job (137).
