Morgan Jerkins
Morgan Jerkins is the book’s author. She is a Black American writer whose work focuses on race in America. For this book, she was inspired to research her own genealogical roots, with the larger goal of researching Black American history and migration in general. Jerkins grew up in New Jersey and was raised by her mother. Jerkins’ father is from North Carolina. While researching this book, Jerkins traveled to various locations in the United States that have historical significance in this regard, including Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and California.
