Summary
In Chapter 40, “Bull in a China Shop” (40), Irving recalls attending a conference about white privilege. She was surprised to discover that the conference founder, Dr. Eddie Moore, was a black man. During the conference, Irving's friend told her that a question she had asked another attendee about what he did for work, could be an example of white privilege because the “glorification of professional status is a white culture thing” (213).
Part VIII, “Outer Work” (217) begins with Chapter 41, “From Bystander to Ally” (219). Irving compares racial intolerance to bullying and explains that readers who wish to be allies to people of color should intervene when they observe a racist incident.
