Summary
Chapter 6 begins with Ali’s arrest. Israeli police officers discover the 16-year-old Bedouin boy in a stolen GLK-class Mercedes SUV and wonder whether Ali committed Asum’s hit-and-run. When Cheetah, one of Liat’s colleagues, interrogates Ali, he breaks Ali’s thumb, convincing Ali to confess to Asum’s murder. Ali refuses to reveal the identity of his partner in crime, convincing Liat of Ali’s innocence. She proceeds to reflects on the events that lead to her career in law enforcement. As a child, Liat solved the case of her Uncle Nissim’s missing motorcycle helmet by looking into the eyes of her suspects until she identified a boy named Aviram as the helmet thief because he refused to meet her gaze. Liat’s grandmother described Liat’s intuitive gift as the sight and helped Liat cultivate her skills throughout her life.
