Summary
In the Prologue, young Eva Reyes writes in her journal that her friend made fun of her for being crazy. Eva’s parents are sending her to a psychiatrist because she has dreams that predict the future. In File No. 1398, a BBC London news reporter named Jacob Lawson recounts a giant robot appearing in Regent’s Park. The people nearby are relatively calm about the metallic figure’s appearance due to the Earth Defense Corps’ (EDC) positive messages about their work with Themis, a similar-looking robot with supposedly alien origins. In File No. 1399, Dr. Rose Franklin, the head of the EDC’s science division, recalls her cat, to which she cannot remember what happened. Rose had gotten into a car accident 13 years ago and woke up four years later, without any memory of those missing years. Rose died...
