Summary

In Chapter 38, narrated by Ella, Katherine told Ella that she loved her, a statement that made Ella’s heart swell with pride.

In Chapter 39, Katherine decided to go and talk to Nate on her own, a decision that proved disastrous. Katherine became angry in the diner crowded with Black people because she did not get served as quickly as she believed she should have been. Some men began muttering that Katherine did not belong there. Leroy and two other men escorted Katherine home to keep things from getting worse. Leroy corroborated the story when Ella’s mother told Ella how Katherine had behaved.
