Summary

In Chapter 11, Ella knew Leroy was back when she came home to find a basket of red roses and fruit on the doorstep. He had been gone for ten months, but her mother took him back like nothing had happened. Leroy greeted the other children happily, but he did not speak to Ella. Ella prayed he would go away again soon.

In Chapter 12, set in Philadelphia in 1963, Kate knew her father and other White men hated the way Black people were buying their own farms and demanding higher wages. Her father hosted an emergency meeting when they heard Blacks were registering to vote.

Chapter 13 returns to Ella’s narration. When Mrs. Catchedy died, Ella's community received a reminder that people really had not changed that much since before civil rights times. Nate, who had been friends with Mrs. Catchedy and visited her...
