Summary
Since the chapters vary in length, the following chapters have been arranged according to character, instead of the order that they appear in the text. In “Theater,” Magda, Cromwell's assistant, leads Irina to a theater, where she watches a screen with the AI's thoughts displayed. Glyphs form in waves on the screen, like ideograms in a black hole (51). She watches the glyphs seethe, split, and fuse, but she cannot make anything of them (51). The machine focuses on the Santa Monica coast. She realizes that the AI is the biggest that she has ever seen, and the surface is large while she is in it.
