Summary
In Chapter XIII, before her outing with Vladimir, the narrator spent “twice as long as usual” on her body, hair, and makeup (150). She told John she would not be attending his hearing that day. Before her class, she stocked up on groceries.
Edwina appeared at her office after class, wanting to get coffee. The narrator felt offended Edwina had not responded to her recent emails. However, when Edwina started crying, the narrator was sympathetic. Edwina was upset because Cynthia had given her an F on her recent memoir assignment. The narrator suggested that Cynthia was simply challenging Edwina. The conversation shifted to John’s hearing. Edwina argued that because she was not white, the issue did not concern her.
