Part 3, Salvage: Chapters 26-32 Summary
Steiger is called to the Pentagon two months after submitting his report on the discovery of Vixen 03. Steiger is questioned closely about the discovery and then is told that he cannot salvage Vixen 03, not even for the recovery of the bodies. Steiger is disappointed, as is Pitt, but they both feel there is little they can do. The President is aware of the discovery of Vixen 03, and it is under his orders that the Pentagon puts a lid on it because President Eisenhower went to a lot of trouble to cover it up, so they feel they must follow suit. When Steiger and Pitt talk, Pitt promises to return to Colorado as soon as he can to recover one of the stainless steel canisters in hopes it will reignite interest in Vixen 03.
