Summary
In ‘Horace Thomas Cross Confessions’ Horace recalls childhood memories of his grandfather slaughtering chickens. Ezekiel would place them on a block and chop off their heads with an axe, while Horace’s grandmother would wring the chickens’ necks. Horace remembers boiling the chickens, plucking out their feathers, and the music and television of his childhood. Horace recalls playing sports and when he became interested in superheroes, particularly the Black Panther, the first black superhero he was introduced to.
Horace thinks, “I remember watching men, even as a little boy. I remember feeling strange and good and nasty” (248). He remembers being scared at night, of animals and monsters.
