Chapter 93-97 Summary
This chapter opens with the phrase "part five, violets are blue." Cross begins to experience relief as details about Westin and the vampires surface. Westin met the magicians and pretended to follow until he felt able to oust them. He also recruited William and Michael to kill for him, in the cities where the magicians appeared.
Even with Westin in jail and the case wrapped up, Cross feels uneasy. He thinks of Hughes in San Francisco and fears for her safety. He ponders the feelings for some time before he realizes the cause: the Mastermind is still at large. Cross flies to San Francisco from Santa Cruz and drives, quickly, to Hughes's neighborhood. He sits in the car outside her house, remembering the fate of his past partners. He realizes the Mastermind hates women in general, given the cruel ways he...
