Chapter 65 Summary
The Mastermind follows Cross and Hughes. He disapproves of the budding relationship. The Mastermind sees no need for love. He wants Cross to remain a loner, as he is. The Mastermind dreams of killing Cross tonight. He feels no fear. He decides not to pursue Cross, however, because it would be too dark to see Cross's eyes.
Chapter 65 Analysis
The Mastermind's disapproval of Cross's feelings towards Hughes provides the reader with a small clue as to his real identity. Craig resisted bringing Hughes to New Orleans in the first place. The Mastermind sees love as unnecessary. He feels that love and hate occupy the same space within a person. Such feelings seem incongruous with Craig's real life, in which he has a wife and children.
