Chapter 39-41 Summary
Cross returns to the Washington DC Police Department for a normal week at work. He considers the pros and cons of taking the position with the FBI. He also dreams of a love life and the opportunity to settle down with one woman. Cross goes out on a date with a childhood friend, Macy Francis. He notes her clothing in detail. The evening turns sour, though, when Mary becomes drunk. Back at her condominium, she shares many details about her past. Feeling that Mary cannot make a fair decision about the night, Cross stops after a little necking. When he refuses to go further, Mary blows up, cursing Cross and men in general. On the way home, Cross reminds himself that he hates dating.
