Chapter 38 Summary

The Mastermind watches the Cross family during the night, as they sleep. He wanders through the house undetected. He remembers a lot of details about the Cross family and feels strongly connected to them, especially Alex Cross. He reminds himself that he has left Cross all the necessary clues. He wants to be stopped in his killing spree. After some deliberation, he decides that this will not be the night he kills Cross.

Chapter 38 Analysis

The change of point of view to that of the Mastermind surprises the reader. Though his identity remains hidden, the reader gains much insight into his motives and history. He exhibits classic desires of a serial killer, in that he wants Cross to catch him, and to stop his killing spree.
