Chapter 19-25 Summary
Cross continues to be impressed with Hughes's dedication to her job. He wonders what from her past motivates her to work so hard and put in such long hours. In a phone call with Hughes, Cross discusses the necessary research about tigers in connection with the San Francisco murders.
Cross turns down Hughes' offer for a beer after work, however. Given the fate of his last two partners, Cross fears getting close to another woman in the business. He fears the Mastermind will target Hughes if the two become involved.
Hughes's connection at the newspaper generates a lead for the officers to follow up on. Tim finds an old case of attempted murder in LA.
