The poem describes the different aspects of a dream deferred and its consequences: traveling, nothingness, impotence, and confusion.

This poem speaks once again of the dashed hopes for equity of black Americans. Most interestingly, Hughes speaks of the confusion that emerges when a dream gets kicked around. The confusion that has emerged in the wake of an unrealized promise is the confusion between blacks and whites but also the confusion among them. Racism, segregation and subtle discrimination has splintered Americans into a thousand facets of the dream deferred.
