This poem is a fulfillment of the professor's claim about the poetic act, even as it questions his claim. By problematizing the professor's idea that one can simply let a page emerge, Hughes highlights the fraught consciousness of the black American, who can never simply be, but must always anticipate the expectations of those who insist on judging him no matter what he does.
