This poem is about a little girl dreaming of playing on a baby grand piano, and a little boy dreaming of the boxing gloves Joe Louis wore.

The title of this poem refers to its subjects desire to be somebody. The boy and girl, presumably African American, dream of rising to the top, and the reader knows that their odds of doing so are slim, though the poem ends—perhaps ironically—with the saying, "There's always room at the top."
