Mama and Daughter Summary
A daughter asks her mother to brush her coat so she can look her best when she goes to visit the young man she likes. Her mother asks who her sweetheart is, and tells her that she felt the same way about the girl's father before he left her.
Mama and Daughter Analysis
In this poem, the mother aids her daughter in beautifying herself for her sweetheart even as she tells her the story of her own broken love. She hopes that the girl's father will rot in hell just after she recalls how smitten she was with him. We are let wondering whether the mother fears that her daughter will be similarly treated by her boyfriend.
