Summary
John and Smith are both booed and cheered after they leave the arena, and they are given two days to leave the Olympic Village, having been suspended from the team. Many criticize the gesture and criticize the men, believing they have everything including publicity, but Smith responds to that by saying that neither he nor Black people in America can eat that. He loses his job instantly, and people start to call them militants. Many at San Jose State do not support Smith, but the president does. Smith cannot find a good job, but he moves back to Lemoore to teach as part of his degree (185).
