Summary
In Chapter 6, because Pampa prophesied Domingo’s imminent death, he spent “the next twenty-four hours getting drunk at the Cashew” (67). Overcome by sorrow, his heart exploded and he died. Although she had known he would die, Pampa felt “estranged from herself” in the wake of his passing (69). She realized that after mother’s death, “her identity had been transformed” into an unsolvable mystery (69). She would continue living and would lose everyone she loved. Despite her grief, she was overcome by “sexual hunger” and turned her attention towards Bukka (70). Bukka initially worried about Hukka’s wrath. However, because his brother had stopped respecting him, Bukka gave in to Pampa’s advances.
