Summary
Maître returned home, determined to abandon Sharon’s case as Sharon seemed set on withholding information from her. However, Lila was happy when Maître arrived at the house. Maître silently resented her parents for never having cared for Lila as well as Sharon. She felt sorry for her parents, but would not falsely confess to having “given birth to Lila” to appease them (142).
The next day, Rudy called Maître to say he had never seen Lila so happy. She loved him, her mother, and Maître’s parents, but seemed to love Sharon best.
