Summary
In January of 2019, Gilles Principaux visited Maître Susane’s law office about defending his wife. Maître Susane recognized Gilles from her past, but could not place him. She wondered why she “felt anguish rather than joy” upon seeing him, when she remembered being enraptured by him 32 years prior (4). She wanted to tell him she knew him, but Gilles showed no sign of remembering her. He did not explain why he had sought her either, as she had never had high profile clients.
Before Gilles left, Maître Susane asked him if “he’d once lived in the Cuadéran neighborhood” (5). When he confirmed that he had, Maître Susane said she had known a family from there. Then Gilles begged Maître Susane to get his family “out of this nightmare” (7). She did not exactly understand his meaning.
