Summary

In Chapter 19, Elvis returns to the apartment and ponders his next move. He thinks about Maite, and remembers that she had the same dictionary from which he chooses his word of the day. He even “wonder[s] what her voice sounded like” (187). Elvis and El Güero later intercept Sócrates at a coffee shop and bring him back to his apartment. They beat Sócrates and he admits that he is an informant for Anaya. However, instead of handing Leonora over to the DFS, Sócrates had brought her to the home of the priest. He had told her that he would place an ad in the paper when it was safe for her to come out of hiding. Sócrates gives Elvis the message that should be placed in the paper.
