The Desert
Throughout the novel, images of the desert, represent isolation and loneliness. The dryness and barrenness of the land mirrors and enacts the female protagonists' feelings of abandonment, of frequent powerlessness. Indeed, the land often seems to reject human survival. Their ability to find hope and strength amidst it, shows their determination to survive even in the most depleted of circumstances.
Old Lady
Mary Rose's rifle, Old Lady, symbolizes resilience and courage. Having been taught to shoot on the gun as a young girl, Mary Rose find strength and bravery just holding Old Lady. When Strickland arrives on her property and intimidates her, she is empowered by the weight and power of the gun, though she does not even know if it is loaded. Other times she feels afraid, she draws Old Lady close.
