Chapter 16, Valletta, and Epilogue, 1919 Summary
Pappy Hod is on the Scaffold, a ship in Malta, at the time of the Suez Crisis. The sailors are bringing the ship in and talking about what they will do that night. They decide to go drinking at an area bar. Pappy dances, trying to break his record for most dances in a row. The other sailors are resigned to taking care of him when he gets drunk. The sailors get a taxi to take Pappy home. They have a hard time since most of the other sailors and marines are out drinking. They return to the dockyard, and Paola and Benny Profane are there. Pappy recognizes Paola. She promises to be waiting for him in Norfolk, and they can start over again and pretend the past never happened. Stencil goes to see Paola's father, Fausto...
